Angels, Demons and Dysfunction: A Day in the Life of Faith

A day in the life of Faith (hour by hour):

12 am: Rounds on Rogers Children’s Hospital ICU unit. Fifteen patients in ward.  Three under my direct care. All sleeping. Helped another nurse with wound care on a burn patient while student nurse watched. Was vomited on twice. Once by student nurse. Once by patient as a sympathetic reaction to student nurse. Wonder just how much work it takes to get regurgitated cherry jello vomit out of my hair.

1 am: Hair is crusty. Student nurse is apologetic. Need coffee. Call light. So much for coffee.

2 am: Still no coffee. Damn it. Don’t I have a break coming up soon? Forced to run Malachi out of empty room and off Skinemax. Really, there are sick kids in this place. No one needs to hear those sorts of noises at the end of a dark hall. Especially me. Besides, who in their right minds uses a breadstick that way? May never eat Italian food again.

3 am: Patient (not mine) coded. Forced to kick the crap out of Angel of Death’s minion until soul returned. Still haven’t gotten my break. Or coffee.  Considering asking Harold if he’ll do my charting so I can ditch out for five minutes. He’s better at it than I am anyway. Even if he is a ghost.

I love a book that pulls me in on the first page and doesn’t let me go until the last. I love a book that has me so engaged, I forget the time, the place, the fact that I was supposed to be in bed asleep two hours ago. I love a book that can make me laugh out loud, that has me smiling or crying or holding my breath as I turn the pages. 

A good book entertains.  A GREAT book transports. It’s the 3D IMAX experience that springs from the page and surrounds you with the sights and sounds and emotions of the characters and worlds it creates.  It makes you reluctant to leave and eager to return.

One of the most frustrating things for me as a reader is to get pulled out of that immersive enjoyment.  Who else hates it when the projector gets fuzzy in the middle of an action scene . . . or worse yet, the love scene when you’re invested in a movie?  It breaks the mood and sometimes it’s next to impossible to get back to that intimate participation.

We all have our pet peeves, things that annoy or interrupt our reading pleasure.  Here are a few of mine:

Since it's the month of love, I thought I'd talk about things I love to hear (or see) my readers say. Maybe this list will give you some ideas on how to make your favorite author's day.

1.  I'm telling all my friends about you/your book/series.

I am always excited to talk books with my friends. And the excitement is even greater when one of us has read a really awesome book. There's something very satisfying about being able to relate to others about a story.

I love the idea that readers are chatting with their friends about my work.


2.  I loved your series. I've read them all!

No one forces us to read an entire series, so when a reader does, it's all the more gratifying to me as an author. It means they stuck it out through all the highs and lows.


3.  I'm off to reread your book/series.

I reread my favorites. It's a rush when readers put my work into that coveted classification. To me it's right up there with being on a reader's auto-buy list.
